21 April 2003 - 11:01 p.m. If anyone needed any proof that my cousin Madelyn is hysterical, and probably too smart for her own good, here's a copy of an e-mail from my Aunt. Keep in mind that Maddy's 5. Madelyn is starting to ask a lot of questions about the Easter Bunny and Santa. I suppose I should expect it. At three I completely ignored her question, "Mama, is Santa just a character?" Totally changed the subject. Earlier this year we had this conversation: "Mom, a real bunny can't hop around the world in one night so how does the Easter Bunny get to everyone's houses?" I said, "What do you think? Maybe he's a magic bunny." "Mom, there is no such thing as a magic bunny. Besides, how does he get into the house without a key?" I said, "I hadn't considered that. What do you think?" She said, "Well, Santa is magic so he must help the Easter Bunny out." The night before Easter we had the following conversation: "Why does the Easter Bunny have different fur color in the pictures of me with him?" I said, "Maybe the bunnies at the mall are helper bunnies." "Maybe. But a real bunny can't hop all the way around the world. He must have help from Santa. And Mom, real reindeer can't fly, so how does Santa get around." I just looked puzzled. Didn't respond. "Maybe Santa drives a car! And, he must know someone who makes sure he doesn't get caught breaking the speed limit because he'd HAVE to break the speed limit to get all the way around the world in one night. How does the Easter Bunny get into the house if we lock the door?" I said, "I'm not sure. What do you think? "Santa helps." Tonight's conversation: "Will the Easter Bunny come again tonight." I said, "Nope. He's probably exhausted. He won't be back until next year." "Did he go all the way around the world last night?" I said, "I think so." "Even Kenya?" I looked at her, wondering how she even knew there was a Kenya. "Even Brazil? Canada? The U.S? Of course the US. Even Boston? Japan? China? Iraq?" I said, "I think everywhere." "Hmmm." My personal favourite part of this is the fact that Boston is an exotic location like Kenya, Brazil, Japan, China and Iraq ... look for a Why Life Is Happy Update soon ...
